ROOTED IN ATHLONE. MOVING CAPE TOWN.
Hewat Athletic Club is a community running club based in Athlone, Cape Town, built on discipline, support, and a shared love for the road.
Our story started at Hewat Teachers Training College.
Hewat Athletic Club originates from the Hewat Teachers Training College in Athlone, now known as Athlone College. The club was officially started in 1995 and has grown into a community club focused on running, health, and togetherness.
Running to improve the health of the community.
HewatAC strives to improve the health of the community through running, structured training, race participation, and a supportive club environment.
More than running.
Mental Health Awareness
HewatAC supports initiatives that create awareness around mental health and community wellbeing.
Vygieskraal Outreach Programme
Before COVID, Hewat Athletic Club was based at Vygieskraal Stadium, close to an informal settlement. Through its Social Responsibility Committee, the club arranged social events with local residents and used athletics as a way to build confidence, self-esteem, and life skills among young people.
Home of the Cape Town Festival of Running.
The Cape Town Festival of Running started in 1997 as the Hewat Cape Town 100 Miler, organised by Hewat Athletic Club. The event has since grown into a major running event with 100km, 50km, 21km and relay options.
The event takes place annually in July, with races starting from the Sea Point Promenade. The 100km and 50km ultra races also serve as qualifiers for the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon.
